Sophie survives, but Mina is not so lucky. Sophie and her best friend Mina are confronted by a masked man in the woods. The second time, she’s seventeen, and it’s no accident. Considering it’s the collection’s namesake, I Walk Between the Raindrops falls flat, serving as a poor introduction. Rather than creative story concepts or exploring non-normative people, what Boyle shines in is appreciating a character through and through - the voice, psychology, and mannerisms that make each one unique despite heavy overlaps in their demographic Venn Diagram. The ideas lack originality, with two of the stories paralleling Black Mirror. Other times, they’re the default mode and nothing more. Sometimes, these annoyingly recurring traits become the crux of the story, and Boyle invites the reader to inspect or even laugh at them. The other three narratives still include such characters, they just don’t weigh in as heavily as, say, a straight white woman. Ten out of 13 short stories in I Walk Between the Raindrops feature a straight, presumably white, male character, many of whom are self-righteous, racist, misogynistic, or some combination of those three. Though the variability doesn’t go much further than that. It shows in the steady voice prominent throughout his collection, whether the protagonist is a teen or an old man or a middle-aged woman. Boyle is well published with over two dozen books under his belt. When he was done he got the deputy's wallet out of his pocket and took the money and put it in the pocket of his shirt and dropped the wallet to the floor. He sat on the desk and fastened the toweling with tape from a dispenser, studying the dead man gaping up from the floor. He ran cold water over his wrists until they stopped bleeding and he tore strips from a hand towel with his teeth and wrapped his wrists and went back into the office. When he got up he took the keys from the deputy's belt and released himself and put the deputy's revolver in the waistband of his trousers and went into the bathroom. Chigurh lay breathing quietly, holding him. The deputy's legs slowed and then stopped. The deputy's right carotid artery burst and a jet of blood shot across the room and hit the wall and ran down it. He was gurgling and bleeding from the mouth. He kicked shut the door and he wrapped the throw rug in a wad about them. The deputy was flailing wildly and he'd begun to walk sideways over the floor in a circle, kicking over the wastebasket, kicking the chair across the room. Chigurh lay there pulling back on the bracelets with his knees between his arms and his face averted. The deputy was trying to get his hands inside the chain but he could not. And I just don't want any of that all up in my business. I mean, Jesus, think about the fucking stickiness and the sand and my god, the BUGS. I hate the idea of women reading this book and thinking that damn, they have never eaten mangoes naked whilst living alone on a desert island, so they must be missing some fundamental pieces of what makes them alive and powerful and fabulous. The point is, there is no one size fits all approach to living an authentic and awesome life that makes you happy. Some women find stripping fun and empowering or like the money or ANYTHING. Not every woman finds her true self (or whatever) in wearing a wacky hat or bold colors. Maybe a woman can't/won't/doesn't have the means/doesn't feel safe/doesn't fucking want to go on vacation alone, or walking at midnight, or (I'm paraphrasing) frolicking naked in a field of organic sage. You do what makes you happy, I'll do what makes me happy, and we'll be nice to each other and supportive and authentic. But I have a few issues.įor one, my brand of feminism is that every woman can choose what her best life involves without judgement or criticism. I know she meant it - and I took it - as a compliment, and there are a some good ideas and thoughts within. A friend lent me this book because she said it reminded her of me. The Peripheral is a hallucinogenic peek into the future of humanity-and what lies beyond-from scifi writer William Gibson.įlynne Fisher lives in the rural American South, working at the local 3D printing shop, while earning much needed extra money playing VR games for rich people. Flynne is intelligent, driven, and doomed. The protagonist of The Peripheral is Flynne Fisher (actress Chloë Grace Moretz), a woman living in a remote area of America in the future who is struggling to put her damaged family back together. This one is set in a near-future collapsed world economy, to start with, which feels a little bit too real given how things are going.
